Archives & Research

One of the many ways Historic Charleston Foundation seeks to protect Charleston's architectural, historical and cultural integrity is through scholarly research and documentation. Not only does HCF maintain its own records in the Margaretta Childs Archive, staff members also can offer advice to those researching Charleston's architecture and history.

The Margaretta Childs Archives, located in the Capt. James Missroon House, are available to scholars and property owners for research by appointment.

Several collections from the Margaretta Childs Archives are being digitized to be included on the Lowcountry Digital Library.  Digitized collections so far include a photograph album containing photographs of various Charleston buildings, landmarks and sites, battleships, and other Lowcountry places; the Civic Services Committee Papers; Historic Charleston Foundation Tours of Homes Collection; and souvenir booklets for the 1886 Earthquake and the SC Interstate and West Indian Exhibition.  To see these collections and more, visit the Lowcountry Digital Library website
