Art and Architecture: Courier Square and ACBA
An essential component in the planning for an exciting new building at 635 King Street was the willingness of people with diverse perspectives to engage on a fundamental question: As new developments in downtown Charleston have grown in scale, can beauty and humanity be returned to the process of building? This very special site on Charleston’s finest street presented a unique opportunity to explore this question. During this session, architect Christian Sottile will discuss the design development of this project and his experience with the teams at Greystar Development and the American College of the Building Arts. Together, they committed to creating a building that would be truly of Charleston: beautiful, humane, and generous in its detailing. Following Christian’s presentation, professors from the ACBA will lead participants on a tour of the college studios to see some of hand-crafted design elements that will be featured in this building at Courier Square.
Christian Sottile is the founding principal of Sottile & Sottile, a Savannah-based firm working primarily in Nationally Registered Historic Districts. The firm’s work includes urban design and civic architecture, and emphasizes historic research, urban analysis, and community-wide engagement. Their work has been featured in The New York Times, Preservation Magazine, Architect Magazine, and Architectural Digest.
